EducationWorks' programs enrich urban school environments and extend opportunities for learning. The staff engage students in positive activities, inspire their love for learning, teach them ways to solve conflicts productively and give them opportunities and experiences they otherwise would not have.
As POETRY TEACHER for EducationWorks in Camden, NJ, I was responsible for teaching weekly poetry workshops for high school students, grades 9-12. Students participated in interactive and engaging writing workshops that increased their interest in the field of spoken word and poetry, as well as improved life skills.
The Lyrical Playground was a non-profit poetry organization and youth mentoring program founded in November of 2007 by Selina Carrera, Dashay Love, and Donja R. Love. This grass-root effort gave back to the communities by reaching the youth through positive outlets. Its mission was to create those positive outlets for the youth through poetry. It plans to open the minds of young individuals, have them think in ways they never thought imaginable, and write in ways they never thought were possible. This organization was designed to educate, nourish, and strengthen minds in an intellectual art form. Above all, helped youths grow spiritually, academically, and artistically through performances, lectures, workshops, etc.
As the DIRECTOR of EDUCATION for The Lyrical Playground, I was responsible for developing writing and performance workshops that would be presented to our youth/students. All board members of our organization underwent my training before being allowed to present workshops, as part of The Lyrical Playground.
Served as a coach for the Philadelphia Youth Slam Team in 2010. During the summer months of April through early July, I assisted the organization in preparing the youth for their national slam competition (sponsored by Brave New Voices), which takes place in different areas of the country each year.
Currently, I serve as a MENTOR to the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement, assisting them in daily support and life skills.
